The Altai horse breed has been developed, over a long period of time, through a period of grooming and breeding, significantly influenced by the harsh climate of the region of their birth. This breed is reared in the mountains of Altai, and is groomed such that they are well adapted to the harsh environs of the place. These horses have an important role to play in the lives of the nomadic tribes both as a source of meat and hide and also for the purpose of serving as a mode of transport. The Altias have a strong heart, big lungs, sturdy muscles, and well chiseled hooves, which allow them to maintain balance in the rocky terrain. A sure-footed animal is of paramount importance in these regions. The grooming and breeding of the Altia has led to the development of a hardy and strong animal which is indispensable to the people who own it.
Typically the Altai is characterized by an average sized head, a body which is neither long nor short, and also a coat of coarse hair. The neck of the Altai is fleshy and dips angularly to the back. The croup is muscular, coupled with short and sturdy legs. The Altai comes in colors of chestnut, bay, black and gray, sometimes spotted.
The Altai is well adapted to the harsh temperate climate of its birth place, being able to adjust to any kind of terrain and climate. The horse can graze on coarsest of vegetation, making it very easy to groom. The crosses with pure breeds have yielded horses with superlative degree of performance. The hybrid variety is larger, bigger in girth and also stronger. At the same time, this new variety retains the strong constitution and resistance for disease, for which the Altia is famous. There is also a program underway which aims at developing a variety which can yield good meat.
