One of the most unusual light riding draft breed horses is the Andravida. This horse belongs to the region of Ilia in Greece. It is of a large size and is commonly used as a draft horse. This is because of its physical characteristics, which include deep, muscular breast and powerful legs as a result of which it is ideal for heavy horse work.
The common color for this breed is dark bay. It can also be seen in a chestnut or lighter blonde color, but this is less common. Another unusual physical characteristic here is white markings on the head or sides of the horse, which is often seen in show horses of this breed. It is also feature is something that is acceptable in a horse that is to be classified as coming under this breed.
During earlier times, they are mostly used in fighting events primarily because they have such strength and endurance. They were also much sought after for carrying goods across trade routes and in conquests.
Interestingly, in the 13th till the 15th century, it was the Andravida breed that was crossed with Arabian horses for finer breeds that formed the Greek Cavalry and the French Cavalry. Even to this day, the Andravida breed is used as a Cavalry Horse in the Greek army, because of their stamina and their strength. In recent times, they are also being considered for horse racing events, show jumping and other horse show events.
Unfortunately, the Andravida breed today, faces extinction. This phenomenon is present in spite of the fact that efforts have been taken in the 1990’s to prevent it from extinction, by sending 50 healthy colts produced by Andravida stallion Pegasus to breeders in western Greece. However, this effort is apparently not enough to save the breed.
