The Asturian, also known as the asturcons is a small horse breed, with surprisingly agility and speed. It can grow to a height of 11.2 to 12.2 hands. The origin of this horse is Spain, but it was also very much used in France particularly during the Middle Ages. This is also an ancient breed, but its origins are not completely known, there is the possibility that it could have been the result of cross breeding between the Celtic pony and Sorraia, Garrano horse breeds. It was much appreciated for its agility by the Roman during ancient times.
What makes this breed very special is its gait, for which it is most-prized. This is not a trotting horse, rather it moves by alternating legs on one side. In terms of its physical appearance, this horse is distinct because of its small ears, heavy head and large eyes. Its mane flows out and its shoulders are well-sloped. Its feet are tough and well-shaped, as if to have been made this way for its surprising agility. Common colors of this horse are Back and Bay. In England, they are known as the Palfreys and in France, they are known as the Haubini.
In earlier times, this horse was a much preferred ladies horse. This is primarily because of its ambling gait, which allows for a comfortable ride. Today, its population is very limited, so much so that it has become a rare breed. Owners of this horse will have with themselves a very unique and distinct horse breed. Therefore, special care must be given because it is now faces extinction. Those looking towards finding a good ladies horse will find it to be just right, although this requirement is not something really expected today.
