The barb is a desert horse, well-know for its stamina and strength. Today, it is difficult to find pure-bred barn horse because of the great amount of cross-breeding that has been done with this particular breed, primarily because it is endurance abilities.
Owners of this breed will find it to be one with an independent and fiery nature. What is so unusual about it is its powerful legs and short back. Its movements are more a gallop and it really does not have any good horse gaits. As a result, it is a much preferred breed for racing. Mostly the barn is found in gray color, but it can also be seen on Chestnut, Black and bay colors. It can grow to a height of 13.3 to 14.1 hands.
Throughout history the Barb horse has played important roles. For example, Britain famous King Henry VIII, important many barb horse into the country. Originally, the Barb horse was found in the Barbary Coast of North Africa. Today, however, it is mostly bred in other regions such as Southern France, Spain, Algeria and Morocco.
It is also a breed that faces extinction and through the Organization of the Barb Horse established in 1987 has taken efforts to preserve it, exactly how much of this breed is pure, cannot be completely told. What this breed is most-prized today is for breed with other horse varieties to produce most refined breeds that can be used in many horsing events. It’s stamina, hardiness, agility are qualities that make it much preferred for cross breeding and it’s impact is seen in racing breeds such as the Standardbred, American Quarter Horse and the Thoroughbred.
