The Canadian horse is unique to Canada and a lesser known treasure for the nation. The Canadian Horse is called the “Cheval Canadien” and comes with a rich history of kings and royalty. It is sturdy and muscular in nature and most of its qualities are derived from the Arab, Barb and the Andalusian horses. Because of its sturdiness these horses are in much demand for cross breeding with some American breeds. It was mainly used for utilitarian purposes such as farming and pulling the carriage.
The Canadian horse was naturally acclimatized to the harsh Canadian weather and managed to survive the hard work in severe weather conditions and even the scarcity of food. All these factors contributed to making the horse strong and tough and also easy to maintain. It is also referred to as the “Little Iron Horse” mainly because of its traits. For most people a horse means a classic looking stallion running at lightning speed on the race course. However Canadian horses are not what one would imagine. In fact they are gaining popularity only since the recent past.
The physical characteristics of the horse are, it measures 14 to 16 hh in height and weight up to 1400 pounds. They come in the shades of black, brown and chestnut. Their legs look strong and sturdy with muscular tones and the head is chiseled fine. They are also intelligent and friendly by nature. Their tolerant temperament is what draws people close to them and this quality is expected when it comes to utilitarian purposes. The horses have a good life span and the males can be bred until they are 20 years old.
Today the country has a preservation society for the rare breed because there are only 2400 of them as per statistics in Canada.
