The Chincoteague pony is one of the American breeds. It was first found on the Atlantic coast in Maryland and some parts of Virginia. It was first discovered in 1994 and ever since all the ponies that have been sold could be officially registered. These ponies are mainly used for riding purposes and not anything else. Today though the horse is a registered breed it is actually a wild horse by nature.
The horse has a brief history in which it was believed that there was a shipwreck on the Atlantic coast and a Spanish ship carrying these horses fell. The Chincoteague pony had to swim across to the Assateague Island which is its home even today and that is how it survived and came into America. However as a matter of fact in cannot be denied that they are the ascendants of the horses that were brought to America.
The current day Chincoteague pony is only a size of a pony and experts believe that small size was caused due to the lack of nourishment and the harsh environmental conditions for the horses. As a part of an experiment the Chincoteague pony was fed a higher protein diet and as a result it was observed that these horses grew to the size of a full horse. Most of the diet consisted of beach grass and cord grass for these horses naturally. Due to this the horses also sported some what stout and flat look bodily.
The Chincoteague pony can be mainly divided into two different herds. One from Maryland and the other from Virginia which are the either ends of the Assateague Island. There are only about 300 such horses on the island and for some reason the breeders do not want to grow them to complete sizes.
