The Crioulo originated somewhere near South Brazil and the border of Uruguay. The people of the Rio Grande de Sul region are known to have recognized the horse and its capabilities and raised it further. Actually the horse is a variant of the Latin American Creole breed. Like many of the horses in the continent this horse is also a cross between the African, Arabian and European breeds. There are many cross breeds in the America’s region; however only a few had developed distinguished qualities and managed to enter the book of top breeds maintained by the horse breeders associations.
Because of the lineage of the Crioulo it can be used as a race horse and is used in many events for fast running such as the Golden Bridle contest for example. This contest held in Brazil every year is one of the most popular ones to promote the interests of the Crioulo horse. The whole purpose of this much acclaimed contest is to declare the dressage, the resistance levels, tameness and the courageousness of the horse and only a true Crioulo breed can display all of these characteristics. Another such contest is the Paleteada which is an offshoot of the former and this particular contest establishes the conducting of an Ox where the horse’s top qualities are showcased.
Reining is another kind of the Western Horsemanship where the horse has to undergo various levels of dressage and is also known to be one of the most technical affairs. For a breed of horse to undergo this kind of dressage it needs formal training in the field. Controlling and conducting a horse are two different aspects and the Crioulo is also trained for reigning. In fact in one of the reining it was established that the Crioulo breed is one of the best conducted horses that can be conducted with abstinence or with very little presence.
