The Dutch Draft horse is a native of Holland. The horse bears close resemblances to the Belgian draft and is also an offspring that originated using the Belgian Draft Horse. Just like the Belgian Draft the Dutch draft is also strong and massive in build. There was a possibility that the Zeeland horses were crossed with the Belgian draft to produce the Dutch draft as these horses are found in plenty in the Zeeland and North Brabant areas. The people of Holland bred such horses so that the outcome was a strong and a muscular horse which was capable of taking heavy work loads for extended period of time. The main occupation was farming here and it required a lot of heavy work. Using a weak animal such as the cow or buffalo was not suitable for the farmers. Horses were ideal because they were strong and fast.
The best qualities of the Dutch draft horse were it had an amazing and a quiet disposition and well coordinated movements. It is a reserved horse by nature but can be very deft with its foot. If a horse is good with its feet the farmers benefitted greatly because they are suited for any type of terrains and also they needed to spend only little time driving such horses. These are the much treasured qualities of the Dutch draft. Due to the increased mechanization of farms and heavy motors being used there has been a steady decline in the horse breeds and it is very difficult to come across original breeds like the Dutch Draft even in Holland.
The Dutch draft usually comes in Chestnut, bay and gray colors. There is also a spotted variation in the horse and it could only be a pigmentation of the skin and not a result of cross breeding.
