There are two kinds of horses, the warm blood and the cold blood. A single breed of horse can belong to both the categories however the warm bloods of the breed are used for racing and other sports which involve fast paced activity. The Dutch Warm blood horse is also used for equestrian sports like dressage, jumping and driving. It is also formally categorized as the Dutch Sport horse. The horse could have evolved with the bloodline of the former Dutch sport horses like Gelderlander and Groningen. Holland has had a long history of sport horses and the people in this country were horse enthusiasts right from the beginning.
The Dutch horses have had a strong influx of cross breeding from horses of other countries from times unknown and hence one can retrace the Dutch Warm Blood’s qualities to popular studs like the Arabian horses today. The warm blood has their own breeding community usually and the breeding of these horses is kept secluded so that the bloodline is pure. Unlike the cold blood horses the warm blood were required to be involved in serious sports and if their gene pool is diluted the expected performance may not be the same. Horses depend a lot on their genes for even temperaments, their physical qualities like muzzle and body structure.
Today in Holland there are three distinct types of horses bred. Among the Dutch warm blood horses in Holland there are three integral varieties that are bred. The riding horse is the most common type that is bred because they are very elegant in posture, display good athleticism, are great jumpers and ideally suited for dressage. The Show driving type of horses is very extravagant in disposure and is stylish. They are used for trotting and carriages. The Basic type of horse is another variety which can be considered as an all rounder with all the above mentioned qualities.
