The Exmoor Pony is a very special breed of horses that is one of the oldest and classic British local ponies. Facts say that the Exmoor Ponies have made their existence over 60,000 years back and is the closest breed to the actual wild horses that were found in Europe. The Exmoor Ponies for ages have wandered moorlands of south western England that is called Exmoor.
The breed of Exmoor Ponies is at present extinct and there are just around 800 ponies. However, the count of foals is rising. The Exmoor Ponies can tolerate extremely chilly weather. In order to shield against the wind or heavy rain they have thick upper brows. The Exmoors usually have smooth and polished coats in the summertime. Their coats grow twice as thick during winter and this provides them warmth. Their coats are water-resistant as well. The Exmoor Ponies also have something called an ice tail i.e. it has got hair spread outwards in the direction of the tail that directs the water away from their stomachs.
The Exmoor Ponies have a very classy look. The usually have a slight buff colored loop round their eyes as well as their muzzle. Most of the time these breeds are bay buy they are sometimes even dun or any other shade of brown. The Exmoor Ponies are normally 11.1 to 12.4 hands tall and they weigh around 700 to 800 pounds.
The Exmoor Ponies have a wide forehead. They also have a huge and prominent set of eyes. They have a strong jaw and their ears are quite small. Though their legs are not very long, they have very powerful joints and strong bone structure. They have a very simple temperament. They look very well proportioned. The Exmoor ponies were formerly used for watching and herding farm animals but currently they are used in sports such as jumping, dressage, long distance riding and so on.
