The Frederiksborg horse is truly a unique breed, not only for its character traits but also for its illustrious name, which is befitting for any royalty. This breed is arguably the oldest breed of horse, found in Denmark. Frederick II was the initiator and perpetrator of this breed’s origin and fame, as he is the one who started the breed’s stud book. The bloodlines of these horses can be traced back to the illustrious Spanish and Arabian steeds, amongst others. At that time there was a need for elegant and strong horses that could be used for military, as well as ceremonial and luxury transportation purposes. There was a particular requirement for attractive royal carriage horses that came in a single color. These specifications were met by the Frederiksborg breed. They therefore became ideal riding and carriage horses. The fame of these horses spread far and wide, and the Frederiksborg was exported to different parts of Europe. But with the fall of monarchy, eventually the demand shifted towards draft horses, which could be used in the farm lands and also for pulling cargo. There was a decrease in the population of these horses, during this period, only to be revived in the 1900s, when agriculture became mechanized and there was a renewed demand for riding horses. Sadly, by then the number of Frederiksborg horses, had already dwindled, partly owning to neglect and also due to indiscriminate cross breeding. This already unique breed became very rare, and though attempts have been made to revive it, the Frederiksborg still remains a rare variety.
The Frederiksborgs are known for its refined features and elegant appearance. The horses are exquisite in their countenance and still retain the regal stance of its ancestors. The distinctive trait of the Frederiksborgs is their chestnut coat and golden yellow mane. The head has very chiseled features that sit on an angular neck, giving way to sloping shoulders. The back is long and the chest is wide, making these horses a perfect mount. This breed, to date is one of the best riding horses, the world have seen.
