The French Trotter is a very unique breed which has been developed by meticulous breeding. The French trotter portrays culmination of all the unique bloodlines, which have been bred into it and are a part of its ancestry. These horses can be traced to Normandy, France, where the French Trotter was first developed as mounts for the cavalry. Later, these horses were also used in farms as draft animals. But with the widespread mechanization of all farms and industries, these horses lost their importance and came very close to extinction. The breed was once again revived when a cross between the Russian Orlov and American Standard bred was made. Ever since then, the Trotter is a favorite amongst horse breeders, around the world. The French Trotter, is not a horse which is reckoned for its elegance or charm. On the contrary, this horse is undermined for its busqué profile and also its lack of pace. But in spite of this, the Trotter is much hailed for its calm disposition, good temperament and willingness to be trained. The Trotter is a very sure footed and serves well as a draft horse. It is also quite reputed in the fields of equestrian sports. For Trotter enthusiasts, there are special races held, where these animals put up a show of their speed and agility. The trotters also participate in different events of equestrian sports like dressage and eventing. All in all, though the French Trotter cannot be called an ‘all rounder’ horse, but is definitely a charming breed, in its own right.
