The Gotland Pony is an ancient breed and it has a very fascinating history behind it. Stone Age relics show that these ponies have been living for the past 4000 to 5000 years or may be even more than that. It was in the 19th century much of these ponies were sent for work in mining and farms. Their numbers deteriorated and in the beginning of the 20th century there were only about 150 Gotland ponies left. It was the Gotland Agricultural Society that set about conserving them by fencing about 200 acres of land for their breeding.
Usually Gotland Ponies can reach a height of about 125 cm. They are excellent riding horses as they are fast and quite energetic. Owners of this breed will find them fit enough to be trained for various horse sports like driving, dressage, jumping, trotting and much more. Usual colors for these ponies are buckskin, bay and black.
These ponies make very popular riding horses for children. They are quite versatile because you can use of them as draft horses as much as you can use tem for horse events like dressage, jumping, and trotting. They also make excellent driving horses, and they display impeccable speed and performance. If you are looking for a horse breed that can be trained for various types of horse events, the Gotland Pony is the one to opt. Though it looks really small, it is strong enough to hold adults. They are quite friendly by nature and are strong enough to endure tough kind of work, which is why they were primarily used to do heavy work in the past.
